Jospeh Diel, who runs the Sub imprint, brings his dark, psychedelic style to bear on Groove Manipulation. “Apparenza” is a dense, acid-soaked banger that resounds to complex rhythms, dark drones, a frazzled bass and a general sense of foreboding. These elements all conspire to make for bad trip techno in the truest sense. Diel tones down this mood on “Chiarezza”. There, the sound is dubbed out but still robust, as punchy kicks and a growling bass make for a compelling DJ tool. However, the dominant sound here is one that teems with menace as Sguizla Jr’s heads down, industrial-leaning remix of “Apparenza” demonstrates.
